The 6th Annual IEEE International Conference on Technologies for Practical Robot Applications (TePRA) will be held in the Greater Boston Area, Massachusetts, USA on April 14-15, 2014. With an emphasis on practical applications and industrial participation, TePRA provides researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs and robotics professionals with a balanced forum in robotics science, engineering and technology. The presentations selected through IEEE's rigorous peer-review process highlights new uses of algorithms, components, and whole systems in practical robot applications.

 

Past TePRA conferences featured leaders in the field as keynote speakers including Colin Angle (iRobot), Kevin Blankespoor (Boston Dynamics), Henrik Christensen (Georgia Tech), Helen Greiner (CyPhy Works), Rob Maline (JGRE),Mark Micire (NASA), Mick Mountz (Kiva), Jorgen Pedersen (RE2), Gill Pratt (DARPA), Hanu Singh (WHOI), Mike Rufo (Boston Engineering), Tom Ryden (Vgo Communications), Eddie Tunstel (John Hopkins). As an emerging robotics conference, past TePRA programs included more than 180 technical paper and poster presentations combined, robot demonstrations, student competitions, panel sessions and exhibits.

The conference theme is the new technologies in robotics and automation and their practical applications. While papers are solicited in all related areas of robotics and automation, the conference tracks include:

The TePRA Conference Committee invites robotics researchers, developers, engineers, scientists and industry representatives to submit their contributions (full paper or poster). Instructions to submit:

Papers and demonstrations are solicited for 2014 TePRA in all related areas of robotics and automation. Conference content will be submitted for inclusion into IEEE Xplore as well as other Abstracting and Indexing (A&I) databases.

TePRA in particular solicites the following types of contributions with a focus on extending practical applications of robotics:

  • Evaluation of algorithms under requirements of practical applications like robustness, resource consumption, safety etc.
  • Experience reports on deploying theoretical results on real robots
  • Comparison of different algorithms in specific scenarios
  • Reports from application domain experts what major roadblocks you experienced in applying / using robotics technology
  • New technologies to reduce the gap between research results and innovation for practical robot applications
  • Comparison of different sensor technologies for specific tasks

The above list is not exhaustive and TePRA specifically asks for evaluations, experience reports, best practices and algorithmic improvements that provide added value with respect to practical applicability also on top of existing research work. The following are examples of potentially interesting contributions falling into the scope of TePRA:

  • Ways to get the performance of expensive sensors with much cheaper  hardware
  • Ways to implement ordinarily computationally intensive algorithms on fixed-point  microcontrollers
  • Reliable path planning / coverage / mobility algorithms that meet the “million homes” criteria
  • Detection of execution flaws in robot task executions and responding to them (“not getting stuck”)
  • Software development tools that support separation of roles (component supplier, system integrator), reuse and management of variability
  • Using well-known algorithms with different sensor modalities, e.g. cheaper ones) and carving out the relationship between accuracy and performance
  • Safe interaction with the environment, e.g. protecting the complete volume of a robot against bumping into obstacles
  • Resource aware algorithms, e.g. converting navigation algorithms into anytime algorithms to deal with bounded resources or significantly reduce required computational resources with only slightly lower performance
  • Quality-of-service explication for algorithms and software components

Submissions

Prospective authors are invited to submit full papers for 2014 TePRA. Abstracts and full papers must be submitted electronically through the EasyChair system:

Authors should submit both an abstract and a full paper. Maximum paper length is 6 pages.
